Little Circuit Breakers

Words to Pause is a growing collection of original poems by Briony Lawton, written as gentle invitations to slow down, notice the present moment and reconnect with yourself.

Little Circuit Breakers Briony Lawton

When you think there's no space at all,
there's space to be found in the everyday.
No matter how small.

Tiny punctuation marks
you've stopped seeing.

Watching the kettle boil.
Cleaning your teeth.
Walking through your front door.
Washing your hands.
The shower before the day begins.
The sigh you let out at the end of a busy day.

Little gaps.
Little spaces.

Your mind might be whirring
with all the things still to do,
but these moments are still there.

Quietly reminding you
that you are here too.

So, take that moment.

When the kettle is boiling,
there's no void to fill.

Watch the steam unfurl.
Listen to the bubbling water.
Watch the foam gather in your hands.
Listen to the pitter-patter of the shower.

These are little moments to breathe.

Little circuit breakers
that create space.

Little circuit breakers
to find your steady.

Little circuit breakers
to breathe all the way out.

Little circuit breakers
that bring you back into view.

The space you're looking for
might already be woven
into the everyday.

Take a moment

As you move through the rest of your day, notice one ordinary moment that you would usually rush past.

It might be waiting for the kettle to boil, washing your hands, stepping outside, or taking a breath before opening the next email.

Rather than reaching for your phone or filling the silence, stay with that moment for just a little longer.

What do you notice when you allow yourself to simply be there?
